There is not one perfect wrinkle cure for every individual or skin aging concern. For real answers to what you can do to rejuvenate your skin, here is an overview of the most commonly performed cosmetic facial resurfacing procedures and enhancements and how they are best used. Many turn to chemical peels, microdermabrasion, needling, and lasers to enhance the look and texture of their skin. Our licensed dermatologist here at Integrated Dermatology of Reno has experience addressing any issue you have.

Chemical Peels

The deeper a peel penetrates, the more visible results you may achieve. However, this may result in a lengthier recovery period. The medical aesthetician will select the best chemical or chemical mix for you. A solution is applied using a cotton pad or swab to the areas to be treated. Most peels can be performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, and arms. Your aesthetician may choose to use a combination of chemicals for your procedure to tailor the treatment specifically to your skin type and condition.

SUPERFICIAL PEELS

Mild chemical solutions like glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid are used to lightly peel the skin with little or no downtime. They are typically done in a series to maintain results over time and combined with an at-home-skin-care regimen for best results.

MEDIUM PEELS

Jessner’s Solution, TCA (trichloroacetic acid), or other solutions are used to correct pigment problems, superficial blemishes, moderate sun damage, fine lines, and weathered skin. TCA peels are typically performed in a doctor’s office. You may feel a warm or burning sensation, which is followed by some stinging, and there will be some crusting or peeling for 3 – 10 days.

Microdermabrasion

Considered the “new facial” in some circles, microdermabrasion entails exfoliating the most superficial layer of the skin. A wand-like handpiece, which is diamond encrusted at the end, is swept across the skin along with a vacuum to immediately take away the layer of dead skin. The technique can be performed on any part of the face or body including hands, chest, arms, and legs. Microdermabrasion can improve rough skin texture, mild scarring, uneven pigmentation, superficial brown spots, acne, and blackheads. The results are similar to a light chemical peel. A typical regimen consists of a series of 4 to 8 treatments done at intervals of 2 to 4 weeks. Immediately after, the skin will have a pink glow that will fade within a few hours. Microdermabrasion is often combined with chemical peels.

Micro-Needling

Fractional micro-needling, such as the Dermapen, works to tighten, lift and rejuvenate the skin. Micro-needling or collagen induction therapy uses needles to pierce the skin in a controlled and precise pattern. Micro-needling is safe on any skin type, has short treatment time and minimal discomfort with minimal downtime. It’s effective in reducing fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, surgical and acne scars. Multiple treatments are performed for maximum results.

Resurfacing Laser

ABLATIVE LASERS

Generally reserved for deeper wrinkles, creases, and scars, ablative lasers literally remove damaged upper layers of skin, allowing fresh layers to emerge. The most commonly used systems are the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser, also known as CO2 fractional laser treatment, and the Erbium: YAG laser. Brief, high-intensity emissions of light from the laser remove layers of damaged or wrinkled skin at precisely controlled levels of penetration. Multiple treatments are usually performed for desired results. Many choose this procedure because of the fact that it’s low cost, non-invasive, and there is little to no downtime.
